Ruidoso Mountain maternity session

A trip to Ruidoso is a fabulous way to capture the beauty of the mountains for your maternity session! When this mama reached out to me she said she envisioned a mountain maternity session so I knew we had to go to Ruidoso. The weather held out for us and we thankfully didn’t get any snow storms while we were there but we did have some snow on the ground which made walking a bit more difficult. We met at a popular hiking trail to start our climb up the small hill and when we reached the top we had the most amazing views of the snowy, capped mountains. In case you didn’t know, Ruidoso has a ski mountain that is a popular destination for locals and Texans. If you are wanting a mountain session here are some tips to consider for your trip: How much hiking is involved and am I in decent shape? Its important to make sure that both the photographer and client are physically able to climb any area, especially a pregnant mama! Sometimes the ground is slippery if it’s wet or it may have loose rock. The last thing you want is your pregnant client slipping and rolling their ankle in the woods! Some hikes take time and you will need to account for that if you are planning a sunset shoot. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your final destination safely, giving your client time to catch their breath. Pack light! I always try and consolidate everything I carry into a backpack and then my clients have one bag. I always keep a first aid kit in my vehicle just in case.

My client wanted to capture earthy tones for her session so she chose a beige neutral color, dark green, tan and burgundy and they turned out amazing. Half way through our climb we got the most beautiful sunlight coming through the trees and it hit my clients perfectly!

Ruidoso is a resort town and very touristy so if you are planning a visit be sure to book ahead of time. They have hotels but Airbnbs are the way to go for a more remote, secluded experience! Some cabins don’t have any neighbors close to them so it really feels like you are out in the woods.

As always, be sure to not leave anything behind when you are out in nature and whatever you bring out, bring back with you!
